We asked experts a number of questions about the role of zoos in gorilla conservation. Kristen E. Lukas of Cleveland Zoo, USA (North American Gorilla Species Survival Plan SSP) and Frank Rietkerk of Apenheul Primate Park in The Netherlands (European Endangered Species Programme EEP) were so kind to answer these questions in detail.
The questions cover a wide range of topics: the role of captive breeding and management programs; the responsibilities of zoos concerning the well-being of held gorillas; the involvement of zoos in conservation projects outside zoos and their partnerships with NGOs in the field; the educational and awareness-raising role that zoos play; and many others.
